After an investigation, The New Republic has determined that the comments in our Talkback section defending Lee Siegel’s articles and blog under the username “sprezzatura” were produced with Siegel’s participation. We deeply regret misleading our readers. Lee Siegel’s blog will no longer be published by TNR, and he has been suspended from writing for the magazine.

What exactly is the purpose of placing a young child next to an unexploded bomb in southern Lebanon, except to have a sort of scale comparison ? Couldn’t be for propaganda purposes, because we know that doesn’t happen from Hezbollah. Right ?!
When Um Ali Mihdi returned to her home in the southern Lebanese city of Bint Jbeil two days ago, she found a 1,000lb (450kg) Israeli bomb lying unexploded in her living room.
The shell is huge, bigger than the young boy pushed forward to stand reluctantly next to it while we get our cameras out and record the scene for posterity.
WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT…. we have unexploded munitions, and someone PUSHED this poor kid to and made him stand next to this thing ?
Was it the mother, someone unmentioned ? Please tell me it wasn’t someone from the BBC who just wanted a better shot.
